THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Monday that a Filipino seafarer received an 18-year prison sentence in Ireland for his alleged involvement in a major cocaine smuggling operation in 2023.
The Irish Special Criminal Court convicted the Filipino, along with seven others, for attempting to import 2.2 tons of cocaine, valued at €157 million, into the country.
The original sentence was 28 years, but it was reduced to 18 years due to good behavior. This is the second-highest sentence handed down in the case, with a Dutch national receiving a 20-year sentence.
The DFA’s Undersecretary Ed De Vega stated that the Philippine embassy in Dublin is providing consular assistance to the Filipino and is in close contact with his legal team.
The case involved the interception of the Panamanian-flagged cargo ship MV Matthew off the Irish coast in September 2023.
The vessel, originating from Curaçao, Venezuela, was carrying the largest cocaine seizure in Irish history. The remaining six crew members received sentences ranging from 13.5 to 17.5 years.
The DFA’s confirmation and the embassy’s provision of consular assistance highlight the Philippine government’s commitment to supporting its citizens abroad, even in the face of serious legal challenges.
