OFW Party-list Rep. Marissa ‘de Mar’ Magsino has commended the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) for establishing a dedicated task force in response to increasing cases of investment scams affecting Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
“This initiative is a crucial step toward safeguarding the financial interests and well-being of our OFWs who not only sacrifice for their family’s economic stability, but significantly contribute to our nation’s economy,” said Magsino.
The OFW Party List has previously coordinated with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) regarding the investment scams reported to its office. During Magsino’s visit to South Korea last 9 to 13 June 2023, she was informed about the massive investment scam victimizing OFWs there wherein around P150 million has been scammed from them.
The scam reportedly involves Filipino intermediaries, thus it is imperative that we identify and prosecute suspected Filipino accomplices in investment scams such as this, as well as trace accomplices in other countries through coordination with the host countries’ law enforcement agencies.
“We also highlight the need to provide OFWs with the necessary information and guidance to prevent investment scams. Knowledge and awareness are key tools in reducing their vulnerability to fraud. Additionally, in cases where OFWs have fallen victim to scams, it is imperative to offer them clear and accessible avenues for assistance and redress,” said the lawmaker.
