OFW Party List Rep. Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino has expressed deep sorrow and regret over the recent execution of a Filipino worker in Saudi Arabia, convicted of murder.
In a statement, Magsino extended her condolences to the family of the deceased, who are facing an unimaginable loss.
Magsino emphasized the vulnerability of Filipinos abroad, particularly those facing criminal charges in foreign countries. She stressed the need for stronger protections and support for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Overseas Filipinos (OFs), especially in cases involving capital punishment.
“Our priority remains to ensure that OFWs receive proper legal representation and support,” Rep. Magsino stated. “This includes enhancing legal aid and creating preventive programs that educate OFWs about the laws and customs of their host countries.”
Magsino highlighted her commitment to pushing for stronger protections for migrant workers, emphasizing the OFW Party List’s dedication to guaranteeing their rights and strengthening diplomatic efforts to safeguard their welfare. She referenced her filing of House Resolution 684, which calls for an investigation into the status of OFWs on death row and an assessment of government assistance provided to them.
“As we mourn the death of our kababayan, we must continue looking into the contributing factors to the increasing number of OFWs on death row in the host countries and improve the various assistance currently being provided by the government in their legal battles as well as in alleviating their conditions while in incarceration,” Magsino concluded.
