Rep. Marissa 'del Mar' Magsino
REPRESENTATIVE Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino of the OFW Party List today issued a statement expressing relief and gratitude following the release of 17 Filipino seafarers held captive by Houthi rebels since November 2023.
The seafarers, part of the crew of the M/V Galaxy Leader, are now safely under the care of the Philippine Embassy in Muscat, Oman.
“We are deeply relieved and delighted to hear of the safe return of our 17 Filipino seafarers,” Rep. Magsino stated. “This is excellent news that brings much joy to their families and the entire nation.”
The representative extended heartfelt thanks to the various government agencies involved in securing their release, specifically highlighting the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and Philippine embassies abroad.
“Their tireless efforts and unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety of our countrymen amidst incredibly challenging circumstances are truly commendable,” she added.
Rep. Magsino emphasized that the successful repatriation underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Filipino workers overseas.
She also noted the auspicious timing of the release, coinciding with the recent enactment of the Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers, a piece of legislation the OFW Party List actively championed.
“This law will provide crucial protections and safeguards for our seafarers, ensuring their well-being and rights are upheld,” she explained.
Rep. Magsino reiterated the party’s unwavering commitment to Filipino workers worldwide.
“This successful rescue serves as a powerful reminder that we will never abandon our countrymen, no matter their location or the challenges they face. We will continue to work diligently to ensure their safety, rights, and dignity are protected globally,” she affirmed.
