SENATOR Nancy Binay calls on concerned government agencies to addresses the recurring flooding issues in Metro Manila during a public hearing Thursday, August 1, 2024.
“The Metro Manila Flood Management project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) back in 2012 was initiated to address the recurring flooding issues in Metro Manila.
The project was supposed to enhance flood management and resilience through a combination of infrastructure improvements, better management of solid waste that clogs waterways and community based initiatives.
Yet, a large part of the 13 million residents in Metro Manila remain vulnerable and continue to live in high risk flood zones,” Binay said.
She questioned the numerous feasibility studies on flood management for Metro Manila which she said was funded by the country and international communities, including the World Bank.
“What happened to the over trillion of projects of the DPWH, MMDA, Departments of Interior and Local Government, Environment and Natural Resources? It is painfully evident that these measures have failed to produce the necessary improvements to safeguard our communities and it is deeply concerning that despite the significant funds allocated to DPWH and MMDA, our flood management system remain inadequate 15 years after Super Typhoon Ondoy,” Binay added.
