NAVOTAS Representative Toby Tiangco is calling on his colleagues in the House of Representatives to accelerate the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, even during the upcoming congressional recess. Tiangco believes that swiftly resolving the impeachment case will allow the House to dedicate its full attention to more pressing national concerns, particularly the escalating Middle East oil crisis.
In House Resolution No. 894, Tiangco has appealed to the House Committee on Justice to prioritize and expedite the resolution of the impeachment case. He argues that the scheduled recess, from March 21 to May 3, 2026, would only serve to delay a crucial decision.
“The long recess will only delay the resolution of the pending complaints,” Tiangco stated. “We must continue the impeachment proceedings even during the recess to definitively resolve the question of whether Vice President Sara Duterte has grounds for impeachment.”
Tiangco pointed out that the vice president has already submitted her response to the impeachment complaints. Furthermore, he noted that recent developments show complainants in one of the cases have waived their right to file a reply, clearing a path for the proceedings to advance.
The congressman emphasized that an expedited impeachment process would free up the House to focus on critical issues such as the volatile oil prices, unemployment, wage disparities, corruption, peace and order, education, and healthcare.
“Mahalagang maresolba agad itong isyu ng impeachment dahil napakaraming isyu ang kailangan ng agarang pansin,” Tiangco remarked, highlighting the urgency of addressing the nation’s multifaceted challenges.
He further elaborated on the economic pressures facing the country, stating, “At present, the country is facing significant economic challenges arising from global instability, particularly tensions and conflict in the Middle East, which have contributed to rising fuel prices and increased costs of transportation, goods, and basic services, thereby adversely affecting Filipino households and businesses.”
Tiangco’s call underscores a desire to shift legislative focus from political disputes to tangible solutions for the economic hardships impacting the Filipino people.
