Stranded Filipino officials safely return home from Israel

admin June 21, 2025

TWENTY-one Filipino government officials stranded in Israel amid escalating tensions with Iran safely arrived back in Manila on Saturday morning.

The group, comprised of seventeen local government officials participating in an agricultural technology training program and four dairy industry specialists from the Department of Agriculture (DA), were greeted at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 by Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

Among the local officials were two congressmen, nine mayors, four vice mayors, and two regional directors. Their training program, which commenced on June 10th, was originally scheduled to conclude on June 20th.

The homecoming was an emotional one, as captured in a video shared by GMA Integrated News reporter Bea Pinlac.

Secretary Remulla confirmed the safe return of all twenty-one officials in a report by Mao dela Cruz on Dobol B TV, expressing his gratitude to the Israeli government, Philippine Embassy officials in Israel and Jordan, and various government agencies for their swift and coordinated efforts in facilitating the repatriation.

The officials’ journey home involved a bus trip from their kibbutz in Israel to Amman, Jordan, followed by flights to Dubai and finally a commercial flight to Manila.

The incident highlights the importance of robust contingency plans for government officials traveling abroad, particularly in regions experiencing geopolitical instability.

The successful repatriation underscores the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation and the commitment of the Philippine government to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens, even in challenging circumstances. The experience serves as a reminder of the potential risks involved in international travel and the need for proactive measures to mitigate such risks.
