IN a surprising turn of events, Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III has once again assumed the position of Senate President, replacing Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero as the leader of the upper chamber.
The leadership change occurred during Monday afternoon’s plenary session, marking a significant shift in the Senate’s power dynamics.
Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri initiated the process by making a motion to declare the position of Senate President vacant, which was subsequently approved by Escudero.
Zubiri then nominated Sotto, whom he lauded as a “leader of great integrity,” for the position, with Senator Loren Legarda seconding the nomination.
“With Senator Sotto as senate president, the Senate is in good hands,” Zubiri stated. Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada approved the motion after no objections were raised within the 24-member chamber.
Earlier in the day, Sotto had acknowledged ongoing efforts to initiate a leadership change, indicating that he had garnered the support of 15 senators. Sotto also revealed that he had discussed the matter with Escudero prior to the plenary session, noting that Escudero had expressed his willingness to declare the Senate presidency vacant.
The swift and seemingly amicable transition suggests a carefully orchestrated move within the Senate, raising questions about the motivations and potential implications of this sudden shift in leadership.
