SENATOR Imee Marcos, the sister of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., was rebuked in the Lower House of Congress for her apparent insinuation that Congress is seeking trouble by impeaching Vice President Sara Duterte and allegedly playing with democracy.
Gabriela party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas and Kabataan party-list Rep. Raoul Manuel reminded Marcos that true democracy does not involve stifling citizens from questioning and knowing what the government is doing, especially in the use of public funds.
“There is sufficient basis to push for the impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte, which was presented during the previous budget deliberation. These steps are not an insult to the voice of the people but a just process to ensure that leaders are accountable for their duties,” said Brosas.
In fact, she stated that Duterte herself showed disrespect for democracy in her behavior in Congress, where she allegedly did not answer any questions about her alleged misuse of confidential funds.
The lawmakers made the statement following Marcos’ statement reminding Congress that the planned impeachment against Duterte and alleged disrespect for the people, especially those who voted for the Vice President, is playing with democracy in the country.
“Remember that her victory in her vote is the largest in history. Are you challenging the 32 million? Or are you looking for trouble to divide a country with so many current problems?” according to Marcos’ statement.
“If there is nothing to hide, she should be ready to answer. The only ones who insult democracy are the so-called Uniteam who deceived the people with fake unity,” replied Brosas.
Manuel, on the other hand, stated that Marcos should not use democracy to defend Duterte because their family tarnished it during the time of her dictator father, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
“Holding any country leader accountable for using their position and public funds for personal interests is part of democracy. Defending leaders who act as dictators, executioners, or brats is not part of democracy,” Manuel added.
