THE Senate of the Philippines officially confirmed on Thursday that its official website has been defaced, following claims of responsibility from a group identifying itself as “hackers.”
The incident marks a new security challenge for the upper chamber, coming just days after it tightened physical security measures due to reported threats against its personnel and facilities. In an official statement, the Senate acknowledged the unauthorized intrusion and assured the public that it has moved swiftly to address the breach and identify those behind it.
“Upon detection of the incident, our technical team immediately initiated security protocols, contained the issue, and commenced a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause and extent of the unauthorized activity,” the Senate said. It added that additional safeguards and security upgrades are now being implemented across its digital platforms to prevent similar attacks in the future. The response follows standard cybersecurity procedures aimed at isolating affected systems, tracing the source of the intrusion, and closing any vulnerabilities that may have been exploited.
Initial assessments conducted by the technical team revealed that no confidential or sensitive data was accessed, stolen, or compromised during the incident.
According to the Senate, the website that was targeted serves mainly as a public portal where laws, committee reports, press releases, and general information are posted for public access. “The website primarily contains publicly available documents and informational materials intended for public access,” the statement clarified, easing concerns over potential leaks of private or classified information.
Authorities emphasized that protecting the integrity, security, and availability of their digital systems remains a top priority, especially as the Senate handles high‑profile inquiries and legislative matters. “We assure the public that protecting the integrity and availability of our systems remains a top priority. We continue to closely monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary,” the Senate said. The investigation is ongoing, and coordination with cybersecurity experts and relevant agencies is underway to hold the perpetrators accountable and further strengthen the chamber’s cyber defenses.
