SENATE President Francis Escudero has filed a resolution to honor former Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, now Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, for his “untiring service” and significant contributions to the Philippines.
Senate Resolution 1223 recognizes Enrile’s nearly 60 years of public service, spanning various roles in government, including his tenure as Senate President from 2008 to 2013. At the age of 100, Enrile continues to serve the country, currently as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel.
Senator Escudero highlighted Enrile’s legal expertise and vast knowledge, which have been instrumental in crafting important legislation and ensuring the effective implementation of government policies related to revenue generation, the economy, peace and order, national defense, and social services.
“Manong Johnny,” as he is affectionately known, has not only distinguished himself as a public servant but also captured the public’s imagination, earning the moniker “immortal Enrile” for his enduring presence through various eras and world events,” said Senator Escudero.
The resolution acknowledges Enrile’s contributions to the administrations of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., former Presidents Ferdinand Marcos Sr., Corazon Aquino, Fidel Ramos, Joseph Estrada, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Benigno Aquino III, and Rodrigo Duterte, whether as a senator or a Cabinet member.
Enrile’s public service career includes roles as Finance Secretary and Acting Chairman of the Monetary Board (1966-1968), Justice Secretary (1968-1970), Defense Secretary (1970-1986), Batasan Pambansa parliamentarian (1978-1986), Senator (1987-1992, 1995-2001, 2004-2010, and 2010-2016), and Cagayan district representative at the House of Representatives (1992-1995).
The resolution underscores Enrile’s dedication to public service and his lasting impact on the Philippines.
