Senate bill seeks to amend Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act

Metrosundaily November 5, 2024

Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa presided over a public hearing on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, to discuss proposed amendments to Republic Act (RA) No. 11686, the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act. While acknowledging the law’s intention to compensate victims, Dela Rosa highlighted concerns raised by the victims themselves, who expressed that the current compensation amount is insufficient to meet their needs.

“Hence, the need to call this hearing,” Dela Rosa stated. “Senate Bill No. 2828 aims to address these gaps left by RA 11696. With the help of all the resource persons present, your Special Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims’ Compensation may now formulate a proposal that renders the existing legislation more stable than before.”

The hearing focused on addressing the shortcomings of the current law and exploring ways to provide more comprehensive and equitable support to the victims of the Marawi siege.

This version is more concise, focuses on the key points of the story, and highlights the concerns raised by the victims. It also emphasizes the purpose of the hearing and the potential impact of the proposed amendments.
