Sedition charges possible for Manila rioters, says Remulla

admin September 22, 2025

INTERIOR Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated on Monday that individuals involved in the violent protest in Manila City on Sunday could face sedition charges.

Speaking at a Palace press conference, Remulla emphasized the severity of the actions, indicating that the charges could extend “as far as sedition.”

This announcement follows reports from the Manila Police District (MPD) suggesting that a group of hip-hop gangsters, allegedly influenced by a particular rapper, may have been responsible for instigating the violence during the rally.

Remulla also revealed that initial intelligence suggested some of the minors participating in the rally intended to breach the security perimeter and set fire to Malacañang Palace.

He defended the police response to the protesters, asserting that officers had exercised maximum tolerance and acted within the bounds of the law. The Secretary’s statements underscore the government’s firm stance against violent protests and its commitment to holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
