SAGIP party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta formally filed a resolution to investigate the alleged offshore accounts of Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman George Erwin Garcia. During a press conference yesterday, Marcoleta said that they have obtained evidence of Garcia having two offshore accounts, prompting him to file the resolution to initiate the investigation.
“I have obtained initial documents that verified my initial suspicion,” Marcoleta said at the press conference yesterday. According to the lawmaker, their contacts in America allegedly deposited funds into Account No. 1076300010750 at Scotiabank based in the Cayman Islands under the name of George Erwin Mojica Garcia with an address in Legaspi Village, Makati City.
Additionally, Garcia is also allegedly linked to Account No. 40000-012-8562 at Cayman Island National Bank. Marcoleta did not disclose the amount in the two mentioned accounts, but he confirmed that they were active after their contacts deposited US$100 in America.
On June 26, 2024, Marcoleta revealed that they discovered numerous bank accounts in different countries allegedly deposited by individuals connected to the Miru System while transactions were ongoing between Comelec and a South Korean-based company.
Marcoleta estimated that billions of pesos circulated in the mentioned accounts, but upon verification, they found out that the accounts were closed after his expose.
“George Garcia said that God is his witness that he does not have offshore accounts. Do you think he should remain in his position when we have proven that he has offshore accounts?”
Marcoleta further questioned. The lawmaker stated that if Garcia cannot explain their confirmed offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, he should resign to preserve the integrity of the upcoming elections.
