Russian crude oil arrives in Philippines amid energy emergency

AMID the nation’s escalating energy emergency, a substantial shipment of over 700,000 barrels of Russian crude oil has reached the Philippines.

Palace Press Officer and Undersecretary Claire Castro officially confirmed the delivery on Thursday, addressing media inquiries regarding its arrival. This crucial shipment represents a major milestone in the government’s strategy to ensure a stable energy supply and alleviate the effects of surging global fuel prices, a situation worsened by prevailing Middle East tensions.

The vessel, identified as the Sierra Leone-flagged Sara Sky, reportedly docked last Monday carrying high-quality crude oil sourced from Russia’s ESPO pipeline. Sources indicated that Petron Corporation, the Philippines’ sole oil company with its own refinery, is the intended consignee of this shipment.

The arrival of Russian oil is particularly timely, given the country’s ongoing supply concerns and price volatility, which are largely due to the ongoing conflict affecting shipping routes, especially through the Strait of Hormuz.

Undersecretary Castro assured the public that the government is actively pursuing all avenues to address the fuel crisis. She highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Department of Energy, led by Secretary Sharon Garin, and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in identifying alternative oil suppliers. Countries such as Canada, the USA, and various South American nations have been explored as potential sources, alongside Russia, demonstrating a comprehensive, “whole-of-government” approach to securing the nation’s energy needs.

Castro emphasized the government’s swift response and the extensive measures undertaken to support its citizens during this challenging period.

She pointed to the proactive engagement with international partners and the diversification of oil sources as evidence of the administration’s commitment to ensuring energy security and price stability. The arrival of the Russian crude oil shipment is considered a tangible outcome of these diplomatic and logistical efforts, providing a much-needed boost to the country’s energy reserves.
