Romualdez offers sympathy, urges swift action following attack on Filipino seafarers

admin March 7, 2024

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Thursday expressed deep sorrow and concern following reports of the tragic deaths of Filipino seafarers in a Houthi missile attack on the M/V True Confidence in the Gulf of Aden.

The attack, marking the first fatal assault by the Iran-backed militant group in the Red Sea, resulted in the loss of at least three crew members, including two Filipino nationals, and severe injuries to two other Filipino crewmen.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the Filipino seafarers who lost their lives in this senseless and tragic attack. Their dedication and sacrifices while serving aboard the M/V True Confidence will always be remembered and honored,” Romualdez said.

The leader of the 300 plus-strong House of Representatives assured that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will swiftly provide the needed assistance and support to the families of the casualties and the injured crewmen.

“We stand in solidarity with President Marcos, the Department of Migrant Workers and the Filipino seafarers affected by this heartbreaking incident. It is imperative that we extend all possible assistance to the families of the victims and ensure that the injured receive the necessary medical care and support,” the Speaker said.

The House chief also called for a thorough investigation into the attack and urged the international community to condemn such acts of violence targeting innocent civilians and maritime vessels.

“We call for a comprehensive investigation into this heinous attack and urge the international community to condemn these cowardly acts of violence,” he said.

“The safety and security of Filipino seafarers must remain a top priority, and we must work together to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future,” Romualdez added.

As the nation mourns the loss of its seafarers, Romualdez reaffirmed the Marcos administration’s commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of Filipino workers abroad.

“We assure the families of the victims and the Filipino people that the government will spare no effort in ensuring that justice is served and that measures are in place to safeguard the well-being of our overseas Filipino workers,” Romualdez said.
