Romualdez mourns passing of former speaker De Venecia, calls him pillar of PH democracy

admin February 10, 2026

LEYTE Representative Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, President of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), issued a statement today mourning the passing of former speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., describing him as one of the greatest pillars of Philippine democracy and the political father of Lakas-CMD.

“Today, we mourn the passing of one of the greatest pillars of Philippine democracy and the political father of Lakas-CMD, former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.—a man whose brilliance, courage, and compassion helped shape the soul of our nation,” Romualdez said in his statement.

Romualdez emphasized de Venecia’s role as more than just a public servant, but a true statesman with the rare ability to foresee the future and the wisdom to bring others along. As one of the founding fathers of Lakas-NUCD, de Venecia was instrumental in building a national movement rooted in unity, peace, and inclusive leadership.

Under de Venecia’s guidance, the House of Representatives navigated pivotal moments in Philippine history, becoming a workshop of reforms and a sanctuary of consensus. Romualdez highlighted de Venecia’s revolutionary vision for a Rainbow Coalition, which brought people together across ideologies and faiths.

De Venecia also left a significant mark on the world stage by championing interfaith dialogue, positioning the Philippines as a moral force in the international community.

Romualdez expressed personal gratitude for de Venecia’s kindness, guidance, and encouragement, acknowledging him as a mentor, statesman, and father figure to many in Lakas-CMD.

“To Manay Gina, Cong. Christopher, and the entire De Venecia family—on behalf of Lakas-CMD and the House of Representatives—I extend our deepest condolences. We grieve with you, and we honor with you the extraordinary life of a man who gave his all for the Filipino people,” Romualdez stated.

Romualdez concluded by affirming that de Venecia’s legacy will live on in every public servant who leads with vision, conviction, and love for country, forever remaining the heart of Lakas-CMD.
