Romualdez: Lawyers must be champions for the vulnerable

admin February 2, 2025

Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez exhorts his fellow lawyers to defend and protect the Constitution, rule of law and the weak who can't afford the cost of legal service. He made the appeal in his solidarity message at the Integrated Bar of the Philippines’ 20th National Convention of Lawyers in Lahug, Cebu City Friday (Jan. 31, 2025). Around 4,000 lawyers from both the government and private sectors are said to be in attendance at the biennial event.

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez issued a powerful call to action to his fellow lawyers Friday, urging them to be staunch defenders of the Constitution, the rule of law, and the most vulnerable members of society. Addressing approximately 4,000 lawyers at the Integrated Bar of the Philippines’ (IBP) 20th National Convention in Lahug, Cebu City, Romualdez delivered a solidarity message that resonated deeply with the attendees.

The biennial convention, held on January 31st, 2025, brought together legal professionals from both the public and private sectors. Romualdez’s speech served as a pivotal moment, emphasizing the crucial role lawyers play in upholding justice and protecting the rights of those who lack the resources to access legal aid.

“The rule of law is not merely a set of rules,” Romualdez stated, “but a living, breathing entity that requires constant vigilance and protection.” He stressed the importance of safeguarding the Constitution and ensuring its principles are upheld in all aspects of legal practice.

Beyond the abstract principles of law, Romualdez focused on the human element, highlighting the plight of individuals who cannot afford legal representation. He urged lawyers to extend their services beyond those who can pay, advocating for pro bono work and initiatives to ensure equal access to justice for all.

“We must remember the faces behind the cases,” Romualdez implored. “The widows struggling to keep their homes, the laborers exploited for their work, the children caught in the crossfire of societal injustices – these are the people who need our help the most.”

The Speaker’s message was met with resounding applause, underscoring the shared commitment among the lawyers present to uphold justice and defend the rights of the marginalized. The IBP convention concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among its members, solidifying their dedication to the principles of fairness and equality under the law.
