FORMER Speaker and Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez has expressed deep sorrow and condemnation over the tragic shooting incident at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, which resulted in the death of several students and left others wounded.
In an official statement, Romualdez said he was “deeply saddened and heartbroken” by the violence that took place within the school premises, describing it as a devastating event that brought immense pain not only to the families involved but also to the whole province of Leyte. He emphasized that it is heartbreaking to see young lives filled with promise cut short, especially in a place meant to be safe and nurturing.
Romualdez extended his heartfelt prayers and condolences to the bereaved families and the injured students, as well as to their classmates, teachers, and the entire school community struggling to cope with the tragedy.
“To the parents and loved ones who have lost their children, I offer my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy. I know that no words can truly ease the pain of such a loss, but please know that you are not alone in this sorrow,” he said. He also wished for the quick and full recovery of those hurt, and acknowledged the heavy trauma now borne by school personnel who witnessed the incident.
The lawmaker stressed that schools should always remain sanctuaries of learning, safety, and hope. “A school should always be a place of learning, safety, and hope. It is where our children are sent to gain knowledge, build friendships, and prepare for their future. No parent should have to endure the pain of losing a child in a place where they are supposed to be protected,” Romualdez stated. He noted that the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need to strengthen security measures and ensure that every student and educator can pursue their goals without fear of harm.
To assist those affected, Romualdez disclosed that he has already instructed his office to coordinate closely with local officials and government agencies to identify and provide immediate support. This includes medical assistance, financial aid, and other essential services to help families in their time of need.
“We are committed to extending every possible help during this difficult period. We will work closely with officials on the ground to ensure that all needs are addressed promptly and that the community receives the support it requires to begin healing,” he assured.
Romualdez also called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, swift, and impartial investigation to identify all those responsible and ensure they are held fully accountable under the law. “We must know exactly what happened, how it happened, and who is responsible, so that justice is served and such a tragedy is never repeated,” he said. He added that findings from the probe will be critical in addressing security gaps and implementing reforms to prevent similar incidents in schools across Leyte and the entire country.
Beyond accountability and aid, Romualdez urged the community to reflect on how to further protect the welfare of students. He emphasized that the government and society owe it to the youth and their families to create learning environments free from fear. “This tragedy should move us to strengthen security measures, improve monitoring systems, and promote a culture of peace and discipline within our campuses,” he said. He concluded with a call for unity, saying: “Let us unite as one community in prayer, compassion, and support for those affected. Together, may we turn this tragedy into a catalyst for meaningful change, ensuring that our schools remain sanctuaries of hope, growth, and safety for generations to come.”
