Rep. Poe urges bigger agri budget to tackle climate-driven food security

admin October 24, 2025

Geneva, Switzerland – Speaking at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, FPJ Panday Bayanihan Representative Brian Poe, Vice Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations, emphasized the urgent need to strenghten food security through climate-resilient investments.

Poe cited that the Philippines suffered ₱57.78 billion in agricultural losses due to climate events — with ₱9.89 billion from drought in 2024 alone.

To address this, the House of Representatives is proposing a ₱39.4 billion increase to the Department of Agriculture’s budget. Key priorities include the cold storage facilities, solar-powered irrigation system, crop insurance and forecast-based financing.

“These are essential for making our food systems more climate-resilient,” Poe said.

In addition, Poe announced a proposed ₱10 billion emergency support fund for farmers and fisherfolk to provide immediate aid during climate-induced disruptions.

“Food security is national security,” he stressed. “We are committed to building a budget that protects both producers and consumers.”

Poe also called on international partners to support developing nations like the Philippines in adopting new technologies and financial tools for agricultural resilience.
