WHICHEVER side of the political spectrum one is in, reports of current House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez being eyed as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives leave a bad taste in the mouth.
Nepotism is the practice of favoritism of a family member, usually for an appointment, at the expense of other candidates.
Romualdez is the first cousin of incoming President Bongbong Marcos. While it not the President who votes for the House Speaker, it is common knowledge and part of the political reality that the Speaker has the President’s backing.
Whoever the President chooses as the Speaker becomes the Speaker.
Romualdez being the next Speaker is therefore being frowned upon by some political observers saying that it does not speak well for the incoming BBM administration which has vowed to ensure transparency and meritocracy in the appointments of its officials.
It is not yet clear though who is the choice of incoming President BBM but this early, Romualdez is said to be gathering support from different political parties to support his bid.
The National Unity Party (NUP) has issued a statement that the group is supporting Romualdez.
