Remulla: Plunder raps vs Joel, Jinggoy over flood control scam coming soon

admin May 26, 2026

OMBUDSMAN Jesus Crispin Remulla revealed on Tuesday that his office is preparing to file a plunder complaint against Senator Joel Villanueva in connection with the alleged irregularities surrounding government flood control projects.

Remulla confirmed the development during a press briefing, noting that the case is nearly complete and ready for submission. “Of course, it is not just Senator Jinggoy. We are finishing another one and we can file it really soon, the one against Senator Joel Villanueva. That is another one that is ripe but we need to thoroughly refine how all the information and evidence included are laid out,” Remulla stated, emphasizing that the legal team is finalizing details to ensure the case is solid and properly documented.

In the same announcement, the Ombudsman also confirmed that a separate plunder case linked to the same flood control controversy will be filed before the Sandiganbayan against Senator Jinggoy Estrada.

These developments mark a major step in the government’s crackdown on alleged corruption in infrastructure projects, an issue that has drawn public outcry over massive budget allocations and persistent flooding problems in many parts of the country. Remulla’s statements underscore the anti‑graft body’s commitment to holding public officials accountable, stressing that no one is exempt from investigation and prosecution if there is sufficient evidence of involvement in misuse of funds or abuse of authority.

For his part, Senator Joel Villanueva strongly denied the accusations and dismissed the impending case as completely unfounded. He described the allegation linking him to the flood control mess as “ridiculous,” maintaining that he has no connection whatsoever to the projects or any irregularities associated with them.

Villanueva asserted that his actions as a public official have always been transparent and aligned with the law, and expressed confidence that he will be cleared of any wrongdoing once all facts are presented.
