INTERIOR and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed Tuesday that businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, the alleged mastermind behind the mysterious disappearances of dozens of sabungeros or cockfighting enthusiasts, has successfully left the country.
Remulla disclosed the development during a press briefing, stating that Ang did not depart through any official port of exit. “He passed through the backdoor,” Remulla said, indicating that Ang used an irregular or unmonitored route to evade authorities and leave Philippine territory.
The revelation has raised serious concerns about gaps in border security and the possible existence of a network facilitating the escape of high‑profile fugitives. Ang has been linked to the enforced disappearances of numerous cockfighting players who went missing amid allegations of illegal gambling operations, extortion, and violence. His departure while facing public accusations and potential criminal liability has intensified calls for a full investigation into how he was able to slip out undetected and whether any officials may have assisted him.
Authorities have not yet disclosed Ang’s current location or the country he has traveled to. Remulla did not provide further details on the specific route taken or the timeline of the escape, but assured the public that law enforcement agencies are pursuing all available leads. The Department of Justice and the Bureau of Immigration are expected to review departure records and checkpoint logs to identify weaknesses in the system and determine if additional persons should be held accountable.
