Pulong Duterte calls of impartial drug inquiry, challenges witness credibility

DAVAO City Representative Paolo Duterte today issued a statement demanding an impartial investigation into drug-related allegations against him, while strongly challenging the credibility of key witness testimony. Duterte insisted he welcomes a thorough inquiry conducted by a reputable and unbiased body, asserting he has “nothing to hide” and is confident the truth will exonerate him.

The statement directly addressed accusations based on the testimony of Jimmy Guban, a convicted felon whose statements were allegedly obtained under a witness protection program in exchange for furloughs. Duterte questioned the reliability of this testimony, arguing that its questionable sourcing undermines the integrity of any investigation that relies upon it. He characterized the accusations as based on “unreliable testimony” and “hearsay.”

Duterte broadened his call for accountability, urging Congress to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) watchlist compiled during the Duterte administration. He specifically called for scrutiny of potential involvement among Congress members themselves, particularly those with family members linked to drug activities. He accused those pursuing the current investigation of engaging in “selective justice and political maneuvering.”

In a proactive move, Duterte revealed he has filed perjury charges against Guban, citing demonstrably false statements.
