PNP assures cooperation on hostage-taking inside custodial center probe

admin October 12, 2022

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has assured full cooperation with any investigation that will be conducted by other agencies and law enforcement units on the hostage-taking incident at the PNP Custodial Center that threatened the life of former senator Leila de Lima.

In a statement Wednesday, PNP public information office chief Brig. Gen. Roderick Alba, however, maintained that the police force has taken enough steps to address the incident, which took place on October 9.

“Rest assured that the PNP will cooperate with any independent investigation to be conducted as we support the advocacy of fairness. We implore that this, however, will undergo the appropriate procedure at the proper forum,” Alba said.

This is in response to reports that the House of Representatives will conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

The Commission on Human Rights earlier said it has begun looking into the incident.

Alba also said the PNP’s move to conduct an immediate impartial investigation shows accountability and transparency.

“We have also provided enough information to the public to make the public understand the circumstances,” he added.

Three detainees – Arnel Cabintoy, Feliciano Sulayao, and Abduljihad Susukan – were killed after they attempted to escape from the PNP Custodial Center.

Sulayao was the one who held de Lima hostage.

The PNP will enforce a buddy system for police officers deployed at the Custodial Center as part of stricter measures.
