THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced a list of potential candidates to succeed Police General Rommel Marbil as chief, whose term ends June 7th. The announcement, made Tuesday by PNP Public Information Office chief Police Colonel Randulf Tuaño, sheds light on the selection process and the qualifications of the contenders.
Colonel Tuaño outlined the criteria for selection, emphasizing compliance with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Act of 1990 and established protocols. The final decision, he clarified, rests with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who will choose from a list submitted by the National Police Commission. The President’s selection will be based on identifying “the most senior and qualified officer in the service,” according to Colonel Tuaño.
The potential successors named include:
- Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.: Deputy Chief for Administration
- Lieutenant General Robert Rodriguez: Deputy Chief for Operations
- Lieutenant General Edgar Alan Okubo: Chief of the Directorial Staff
- Police Major General Nicolas Torre III: Chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group
- Police Major General Anthony Aberin: Chief of the National Capital Region Police Office
Colonel Tuaño clarified that any officer holding the rank of Police Brigadier General or above is eligible for consideration. Historically, candidates have primarily been drawn from the PNP Command Group.
This announcement follows President Marcos Jr.’s February decision to extend General Marbil’s term by four months, despite the General reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56 on February 7th. The upcoming selection process is expected to generate significant interest within the PNP and the wider public.
