Pinoy fishers alarmed by surge of Chinese vessels in WPS

admin July 9, 2025

During the hearing, one of the problems raised by fishermen is that they cannot use the boats being provided by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

FILIPINO fishermen expressed serious concerns regarding the increasing presence of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

They reported that the surge in Chinese ships is significantly disrupting their fishing activities, jeopardizing their livelihoods and the marine environment.

The fishermen highlighted the intimidation and harassment they often face from Chinese vessels, which often operate illegally within Philippine waters, depleting fish stocks and damaging sensitive ecosystems. This situation underscores the ongoing tension and challenges faced by Filipino fishermen in asserting their sovereign rights within their own exclusive economic zone.

The fishermen’s concerns highlight the urgent need for effective measures to protect Philippine sovereignty and the rights of Filipino fishermen in the WPS.

The increasing presence of Chinese vessels not only threatens the economic well-being of fishing communities but also raises serious concerns about environmental sustainability and regional stability. The situation calls for a strong response from the Philippine government to address the concerns of its citizens and safeguard its maritime interests.

This could involve diplomatic pressure, enhanced maritime patrols, and strengthened cooperation with regional partners to ensure the sustainable management of marine resources and the peaceful resolution of maritime disputes.
