FORMER House Speaker and Davao del Norte 1st District Representative Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez urges the Philippine government to focus more on prioritizing crucial domestic issues over engaging in continuous bickering with China over matters in the West Philippine Sea.
Recognizing the importance of addressing domestic concerns and enhancing the well-being of its citizens, Alvarez suggested that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. should redirect the focus and energy of the government towards building a stronger and more resilient nation.
“While it is true that international relations are undeniably important, our primary duty lies in ensuring the prosperity and well-being of our people. Let us stop this madness and delusion that we fight China in an armed conflict as part of the frontline of U.S. geopolitical interests. Wag natin kalimutan, iniwan din ng mga Amerikano ang Ukraine, Iraq, at Afghanistan. I believe that by channeling our efforts towards addressing domestic challenges such as poverty reduction, food security, inflation, among others, we can build a more stable foundation for our nation’s future,” Alvarez said.
Over the past months, the Philippine government had been protesting against China over series of altercations between the two coast guards of both countries. Tension arises when the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) conducts resupply mission to the Ayungin Shoal but barred by its Chinese counterparts using water cannon and blocking provocations.
“A few days ago, I read somewhere about the statement of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, he cautioned us about the rising tensions in that part of the sea. And I agree with him. We cannot afford to go to war with China and be a battleground for what is to come. I can only imagine a lopsided battle where after all these tensions – the Philippines is in the losing end, wala tayong panalo dito” Alvarez emphasized.
The veteran lawmaker, who is a true-blooded Mindanawon, even suggested that it is better that Mindanao separates itself from the Philippines if Imperial Manila insists on dragging the entire nation towards the prospect of war.
“If that would be the decision of the Philippine government, to keep on challenging China instead of seeking a balanced and sound approach that prioritizes national interest, I guess it is better to advocate for the independence of peaceful people of Mindanao and free the people of the south from a miserable devastation, as dictated by the north, so that we Mindanawons can be allowed to chart our own destiny,” Alvarez said.
“I suggest that they should think thoroughly their decisions. I am of the position that it is better for the government to provide more jobs, ensure food security, and ultimately, develop the economy for the betterment of the Filipino people,” Alvarez added.
