PCG on heightened alert during Christmas season

admin December 8, 2023

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will be on heightened alert and intensify security measures in seaports to ensure the safety of passengers during the Yuletide Season.

During a PCG Command Conference Thursday, Secretary Bautista ordered increased coast guard personnel visibility beginning December 15 until January 8, 2024 after a bomb attack at the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi on Sunday.

“As early as December 15, Coast Guardians in 15 PCG Districts nationwide shall intensify the Coast Guard presence and visibility,” Secretary Bautista told PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan.

“The PCG shall remain on heightened alert until January 8 of next year targeting “zero maritime incidents” within this critical period,” he added.

The transport chief said proactive measures such as intensified intelligence operations, stricter pre-departure inspections onboard passenger and cargo vessels, 24/7 K9 paneling within the port vicinity, additional sea marshal deployment, and expanded coastal security patrols should be implemented by the PCG.

“District, Station, and Sub-Station Commanders shall also coordinate regularly with port authorities, shipping operators, local government units, law enforcement agencies, and other maritime stakeholders to uphold the safety of lives at sea and sustain efficient maritime operations amid the holiday season,” he said.

PCG maritime assets such as marine vessels and aerial assets will be available for deployment, according to Secretary Bautista.

Malasakit help desks manned by maritime personnel are also available in all seaports to assist passengers.
