OFW Party-List Representative Marissa ‘Del Mar’ Magsino has expressed support for AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner’s statement regarding the Philippines’ readiness for any potential eventuality in Taiwan, particularly given the presence of over 152,000 Filipino Overseas Workers (OFWs) in the region.
While acknowledging that there is no immediate threat, Rep. Magsino stressed the importance of having a clear contingency plan in place to ensure the safety and well-being of Filipino workers in Taiwan.
Rep. Magsino emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan for preventive repatriation, considering the significant number of OFWs who could be affected by any escalation of tensions.
Beyond Taiwan, Rep. Magsino also highlighted the potential impact on the Philippines, particularly in northern provinces, as well as the broader implications for other countries in East and Southeast Asia, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia, where a considerable number of Filipino OFWs reside.
Rep. Magsino called upon the Philippine government, particularly the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), to remain vigilant and continue coordinating with relevant agencies and international institutions to ensure the security of Filipino citizens.
The representative stressed the importance of preparedness without succumbing to fear, urging a balanced approach in navigating the current situation.
