AS the country commemorates National Teachers’ Month this September, the chair of the House Committee on Labor and Employment hailed the Department of Education’s move to reduce teachers’ workload.

“We thank Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte and all other officials for this move. This is a timely intervention that will help ensure our teachers’ well-being,” Rizal 4th District Rep. Fidel Nograles said.

Duterte announced recently that teachers will enjoy a 30-day break after the school year and a reduction of their administrative tasks from 56 to 11.

She said these two measures will soon be enforced in all public schools nationwide, with the DepEd set to release a memorandum to school officials soon.

“Natutuwa tayo na masigasig ang DepEd sa paghahanap ng paraan upang maibsan ang pasang responsibilidad ng ating mga guro. Mainam itong balita lalo pa’t ipinagdiriwang ang National Teachers’ Month ngayong buwan,” Nograles said.

“I am confident that the DepEd will continue to come up with measures to uphold the welfare of our educators. For our part, we in Congress vow to continue to craft policies to this end,” the lawmaker added.

Nograles also lauded the impending launch of a website to assist teachers with financial loan contract problems.

The solon has been calling for greater protection for teachers from onerous loans, and urged lawyers’ groups to provide teachers legal advice regarding financial problems.

“Our teachers often fall victims to loan sharks due to circumstance, that is why we need provide them with financial education, legal assistance, and other ways for them to break from the cycle of debt and poverty,” he said.
