New PNP Chief Torre Takes the Helm: A focus on reform and public safety

admin June 2, 2025

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) welcomed its 31st chief, Police General Nicolas Torre III, on Monday.

His appointment marks a significant moment, as he is the first alumnus of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) to ascend to this position.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. presided over the change of command ceremony at Camp Crame, Quezon City, also promoting Torre to Police General.

The President’s charge to the new chief is clear: to cleanse the ranks of the police force and ensure a strong, visible, and responsive presence for the public. This emphasis on reform signals a commitment to addressing public concerns about police misconduct and improving public trust.

Torre’s impressive career trajectory, including leadership roles at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Police Regional Office 11 (PRO 11), demonstrates his experience in tackling high-profile cases.

His tenure as CIDG chief involved high-profile arrests, and his time in PRO 11 saw the apprehension of Kingdom of Jesus Christ founder Apollo Quiboloy on human trafficking charges.

This background suggests a readiness to confront corruption and crime decisively. The President’s directive to expedite investigations into police misconduct underscores the urgency of these reforms.

The public will be watching closely to see how Torre addresses these challenges and delivers on the President’s expectations for a more efficient and trustworthy PNP.
