OCD Emergency Meeting: 200K+ families affected

admin July 21, 2025

AS of July 21, 2025, the ongoing effects of recent weather disturbances have impacted a significant portion of the population, affecting 225,985 families or 800,864 individuals.

Of these, 20,115 individuals from 5,921 families are currently sheltered in 319 evacuation centers, while an additional 70,720 individuals from 16,671 families are receiving assistance outside of these facilities. In response to this ongoing crisis and the threat of further severe weather, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) convened an Emergency National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Full Council Meeting.

The meeting, held at Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City, brought together key government agencies to coordinate disaster response efforts.

The focus was on the continuing impacts of the enhanced Southwest Monsoon, the recent passage of Severe Tropical Storm Crising, and the potential development of a new low-pressure area.

OCD Officer-in-Charge Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito R. Alejandro IV and Assistant Secretary Cesar M. Idio led the meeting, emphasizing the need for proactive, collaborative efforts across government agencies to address the persistent heavy rainfall expected to impact western Luzon and parts of the Visayas.

Concerns over potential flooding and landslides prompted discussions on early action mechanisms and inter-agency coordination to protect lives and property.

The NDRRMC meeting underscored the crucial role of local government units (LGUs) in providing real-time ground data, which, combined with technical forecasts from DOST-PAGASA, will inform future operational decisions.

The Council agreed to continue close monitoring of the situation, basing all actions on the most current information available.

The OCD’s efforts are fully aligned with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos Jr.’s directive to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events as part of the government’s broader climate resilience strategy, with ongoing close coordination between the OCD and the Department of National Defense under Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. A wide range of government agencies participated, reflecting a whole-of-government approach to disaster response and management.
