Marcos welcomes German President Steinmeier in historic visit

Metrosundaily June 16, 2026

MARKING a significant milestone in over seven decades of diplomatic friendship, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. officially welcomed Federal Republic of Germany President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier to Malacañan Palace on June 16, 2026. The high‑profile arrival ceremony highlighted the strength of bilateral ties and underscored the importance of this meeting, as it marks the first time a German head of state has visited the Philippines in more than 60 years. The occasion was filled with formal honors and symbolic gestures reflecting mutual respect and shared commitment to strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

The welcome proceedings began with a 21‑gun salute, a traditional tribute reserved for visiting heads of state, echoing across the palace grounds as a sign of high regard and warm reception. Following the salute, the two leaders stood side by side to inspect the honor guards, a solemn ritual that represents the sovereignty and dignity of both countries. After the ceremonial review, members of the Philippine and German delegations were formally introduced to President Steinmeier and President Marcos Jr., paving the way for high‑level discussions covering trade, investment, climate action, and regional security.

This visit carries special historical weight, as the last time a German President set foot on Philippine soil was back in 1963. More than 70 years since diplomatic relations were established, this return visit signals a renewed chapter in the partnership between Manila and Berlin. It offers an opportunity to expand collaboration in areas such as green development, education, and technology, while reaffirming shared values of democracy and rule of law. Both leaders expressed hope that this meeting will further deepen long‑standing friendship and open new avenues for mutual growth and progress.
