Marcos wants anti-dynasty law passed before end of term

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed his commitment to having an anti‑political dynasty law enacted during his administration, Malacañang confirmed Thursday, September 17.

The Palace threw its full support behind the recent landmark Supreme Court decision directing Congress to fulfill the constitutional mandate prohibiting political dynasties — a provision included in the 1987 Constitution but left unimplemented for nearly four decades.

The Supreme Court ruling, issued earlier this week, gave Congress a clear directive to pass enabling legislation that would define and restrict the concentration of political power within families.

The Court emphasized that the failure to act on the provision for so long cannot be allowed to continue, noting that the people’s right to equal access to public service remains unfulfilled without it. Malacañang stated that the President shares the view that the time for action has come and is urging lawmakers to treat the measure as a priority.

Enacting an anti‑dynasty law has long been one of the most elusive political reforms in the Philippines, with successive Congresses failing to agree on a definition or scope that would effectively curb the practice. Supporters argue that restricting family control over multiple elective positions is essential to broadening democratic participation and breaking cycles of entrenched power. The President’s backing now adds significant executive weight to the push, though the measure is expected to face resistance from sitting legislators who would be directly affected by its passage.
