Marcos: Gov’t to revisit nuclear energy, expand renewables for power security

Metrosundaily July 27, 2026

AMID persistent concerns over energy security and high electricity costs, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that the government will revisit nuclear energy as a viable option while scaling up the use of renewable sources to bolster the country’s power supply.

The President made the commitment as he acknowledged the urgent need to address gaps in the energy sector that continue to affect households, businesses, and overall economic activity.

Marcos noted that diversifying the country’s energy mix is critical to achieving stable, affordable, and reliable power. He said exploring nuclear energy alongside greater investments in renewables such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower will help reduce dependence on imported fuels and cushion consumers from volatile global price movements. This approach aligns with the administration’s goal of balancing energy accessibility with long‑term sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The President emphasized that all options will be studied thoroughly, with safety, cost‑effectiveness, and public interest as top priorities. The government will also work on streamlining policies and securing necessary partnerships to fast‑track the development of cleaner, more resilient energy sources that can meet the country’s growing demand for years to come.
