PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has accepted the resignation of Manuel Bonoan as Public Works Secretary, effective September 1, amidst the ongoing government investigation into alleged irregularities in flood control projects.
Transportation Secretary Vivencio “Vince” Dizon will replace Bonoan, taking the helm of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) during this crucial transition.
Malacanang stated that Bonoan, in his resignation letter, expressed support for President Marcos’ call for accountability, transparency, and reforms within the DPWH, which is currently under scrutiny for anomalies in flood mitigation projects.
In response, President Marcos has tasked Dizon with conducting a “full organizational sweep” of the DPWH to ensure that public funds are exclusively used for infrastructure projects that genuinely benefit and protect Filipinos.
Furthermore, Marcos has established an independent commission to conduct a comprehensive review of flood control projects, identify irregularities, and recommend accountability measures, aiming to restore public trust in infrastructure spending.
These actions, according to the Palace, demonstrate the administration’s commitment to eradicating corruption, strengthening institutions, and delivering honest and effective public service under the “Bagong Pilipinas” initiative.
Meanwhile, lawyer Giovanni Lopez, the Transportation Undersecretary for administration, finance, and procurement, has been appointed as Acting Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Lopez’s extensive experience within the DOTr, including previous roles as chief of staff and senior positions overseeing critical infrastructure projects, positions him to ensure continuity and build upon Dizon’s achievements in modernizing transportation and prioritizing commuter safety and project delivery.
