Marcoleta complains of chest pain, high blood pressure after surrender

Metrosundaily July 6, 2026

SENATOR Rodante Marcoleta experienced chest pain and elevated blood pressure shortly after he surrendered to authorities on Monday, according to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

The 72‑year‑old lawmaker turned himself in at the Sandiganbayan earlier in the day following the issuance of an arrest warrant in connection with the ₱75‑million plunder case filed against him. Because of his sudden health symptoms, he was immediately brought to a hospital for evaluation and further observation.

CIDG chief Major General Robert Alexander Morico II confirmed the situation, telling reporters that Marcoleta’s condition required immediate medical attention.

“Senator Marcoleta complained of chest pains, and his blood pressure was high, which is why he was brought to the hospital first,” he said. Morico noted that the reading reached “150 something,” though he did not provide the exact figures. He added that after the examinations, the findings and recommendations from PNP doctors will be formally submitted to the Sandiganbayan for the court’s information and guidance.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla explained that given Marcoleta’s age, the health assessment is more extensive than a standard check‑up. “Senator Marcoleta is already 72 years old, so checking his fitness is no longer just a simple matter of blood pressure and heartbeat. He has to undergo a series of tests, including an ECG and other procedures, to ensure his medical fitness,” Remulla stated. He estimated that the entire process could take up to two days to complete.

Authorities clarified that once doctors declare Marcoleta medically fit, they will proceed with the formalities, including returning the arrest warrant to the anti‑graft court and transferring him to the designated detention facility. For now, all procedures are on hold while his health condition is being closely monitored and treated, ensuring that proper care is given alongside compliance with legal requirements.
