SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez paid homage Friday to the 11th Cityhood anniversary of Mabalacat in Pampanga province, whose local government honored him as a “native son” – being the son of a native, the former Miss Juliette Gomez.
“Today is not merely an anniversary – it is an affirmation of the continued growth and prosperity of Mabalacat. This city is more than just a place to me. I have been profoundly touched by this city, its people, and its vibrant culture,” he said with much gratification.
Romualdez, who also traces family roots in Mabalacat and not just in his hometown Tacloban City, told local government officials and residents as well that he is “proud” to be one of them, as he once roamed the community during his younger years.
“My connection with Mabalacat runs deeper. Our ties can be traced back to the old Gomez-Romualdez house, a testament to our familial connections with this city,” the Speaker said, recalling that the pre-war edifice that was built in 1934.
“This house stands as a symbol of Mabalacat’s rich history, our family’s resilience, and the enduring bonds we’ve shared with this city. This house, now known as Tubigan, is more than a building,” he added, as he led the Groundbreaking of the New Government Center.
The anniversary celebration was declared special non-working day by President Marcos.
“I am immensely grateful and moved to officially become an adopted son of your wonderful city. As we celebrate the 11th anniversary of Mabalacat’s Cityhood, we also recognize the resilience, strength, and progress of this city and its people,” the Speaker said.
Romualdez considers the event as “a tangible sign of the progress we are committed to” and that the government hub will be an “embodiment of the spirit of Mabalacat, a symbol of good governance that aims to serve its people better.”
“As we break ground today, we also sow the seeds of a brighter future. Each grain of earth we move symbolizes the transformative efforts that we are initiating. Each brick we lay down stands for the strong foundation of unity and cooperation,” he said.
The Speaker reminisced that their ancestral home stands as a “symbol” of their “deep familial ties” with the city residents, and at the same time a “place where we annually host a fiesta lunch, welcoming friends, family, and officials in celebration of our shared heritage.”
“In receiving this adoption, I am reminded that family isn’t always about being connected by blood. It’s about being connected in the heart. With a heart full of gratitude and eyes set on the future, let us celebrate the city’s past, embrace its present, and prepare for an exciting and promising future,” Romualdez said with much optimism.
