SENATOR Loren Legarda has formally requested a leave of absence from the Senate ahead of her reported overseas travel, according to Senator Erwin Tulfo. Tulfo confirmed that Legarda informed Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian of her absence covering the period August 3 to 5.
“Senator Loren has a leave of absence,” Tulfo stated in an ambush interview at the Office of the Ombudsman. “In fairness, she has medical leave.”
The disclosure comes as National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag separately confirmed that Legarda departed the country on August 2 bound for Hong Kong, with France listed as her final destination. She was reportedly accompanied on the trip by her son, Representative Leandro Leviste. No further details were provided regarding the purpose or itinerary of the Hong Kong and France visits beyond the stated medical leave.
The matter has drawn attention amid ongoing inquiries involving Leviste before the Senate Impeachment Court, where he has been subpoenaed to appear. Legarda’s decision to file for official leave follows proper procedure, though questions persist about the timing and whether her travel could conflict with legislative duties or pending matters. Senate leadership has yet to issue further comment on the status of her leave request.
