Herrera supports improving teacher benefits, work environment

admin July 30, 2024

HOUSE Deputy Minority Leader and Bagong Henerasyon Rep. Bernadette Herrera has expressed her full support for Education Secretary Sonny Angara’s plans to improve teacher benefits and create a more teacher-friendly environment in public schools.

This initiative includes a comprehensive review and simplification of the Results-Based Performance Management System (RPMS) and the reduction of non-teaching duties to allow teachers to focus more on their students.

“Secretary Angara’s commitment to improving the welfare and professional development of our public school teachers is commendable and much needed,” Herrera said.

“Our educators are the backbone of our education system, and it is high time we ensure they have the support and resources they need to excel in their roles,” she added.

Herrera lauded Angara’s directive to the Department of Education (DepEd) to review and simplify the RPMS, which has been a significant burden on teachers due to its complexity.

“By streamlining the RPMS, we can alleviate the undue stress and administrative workload on our teachers, allowing them to concentrate on their primary role of educating and guiding our students,” she added.

Secretary Angara also plans to eliminate non-teaching tasks assigned to teachers, a move that Herrera believes will significantly enhance the quality of education.

“Our teachers should be given ample time to mentor and support students, particularly those who require additional guidance,” Herrera pointed out.

She explained that removing extraneous duties will enable teachers to dedicate more time and effort to the academic and personal development of their students.

“I fully support Secretary Angara’s vision for a more teacher-friendly environment within our public school system. Investing in our teachers is investing in our future,” Herrera stressed.

The veteran party-list lawmaker urged her colleagues to rally behind Angara’s initiatives and ensure that they are adequately funded and implemented.

She also expressed optimism that these changes will be swiftly enforced, leading to a more supportive and effective educational environment for both teachers and students. ###
