Ethics complaint looms for Rep. Gomez after social media post

admin September 1, 2025

THE House Committee on Ethics announced on Monday that it is “preparing for any complaint” that could result from Leyte Fourth District Rep. Richard Gomez’s social media post, which allegedly “insulted” journalists and exposed their names and contact numbers.

The committee’s response indicates the seriousness with which the House is treating the matter.

House panel chairperson and 4PS party-list Rep. JC Abalos refrained from commenting directly on the incident, citing concerns that it “could compromise the integrity” of the committee’s proceedings once it convenes.

Abalos emphasized that the committee acknowledges the situation and is taking steps to prepare for any formal complaint that may be filed.

Abalos also called on all House members to “consistently observe proper conduct and decorum.” He reminded media practitioners that they have recourse to civil and criminal actions against any member of Congress, in addition to any potential action by the Committee on Ethics.

The controversy stems from a social media post by Gomez accusing journalists of being part of a supposed “expensive” media spin after they sought his comment on allegations linking him to a collapsed flood control structure.
