DOJ: PNP should have revoked Dela Rosa’s firearm licenses

admin May 26, 2026

JUSTICE Secretary Fredderick Vida stated on Tuesday that the Philippine National Police (PNP) should have already revoked all firearms licenses issued to Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

The call comes amid intensified efforts to locate the former PNP chief, who has once again gone into hiding following a brief appearance at the Senate last week. Vida emphasized that given the existing legal circumstances and international charges against Dela Rosa, he should no longer be permitted to possess or carry any firearm under Philippine law.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already unsealed the arrest warrant naming Dela Rosa as one of the co‑perpetrators in the bloody anti‑drug campaign launched during the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte.

In line with this, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag described the senator as “armed and dangerous,” warning authorities to exercise caution in any operation involving him. The classification reflects concerns that Dela Rosa, with his extensive law enforcement background and access to weapons, may resist arrest or evade authorities further.

During a press briefing, Vida disclosed that he has ordered a legal panel under the Department of Justice to coordinate closely with the PNP’s Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO). The team is tasked with verifying the exact number and types of firearms registered under Dela Rosa’s name. “What I heard is that there are several items or barrels registered to him. So, we’re collating that information,” Vida said, adding that once the records are confirmed, appropriate measures will be taken to ensure all permits are cancelled and all registered weapons are accounted for or recovered.
