THE Department of Health (DOH) issued a warning on Monday about the increased risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, as the Philippines transitions to the dry season.
This alert follows a PAGASA report indicating dangerously high heat index levels in three areas: Science Garden, Quezon City (46°C); Clark Airport, Pampanga (46°C); and CLSU Muñoz, Nueva Ecija (45°C).
A heat index between 42°C and 51°C is classified as “danger,” indicating a significant risk to health. DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo explained that such temperatures can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, with symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, headache, and vomiting.
He further warned that prolonged heat exposure significantly increases the risk of heat stroke, a serious condition that can cause loss of consciousness, confusion, seizures, and convulsions, potentially leading to death if left untreated.
