DOH says no new cases of mpox recorded in PH since 2023

admin August 16, 2024

THE Department of Health (DOH) has not recorded any new cases of mpox in the country at present. According to DOH Spokesperson Albert Domingo, the number of cases in the country has not increased, and the last reported case was in December 2023.

The official stated that all reported cases have recovered from mpox. On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox as a “public health emergency of international concern” for the second time.

Cases of mpox have increased in the Democratic Republic of Congo, spreading to neighboring countries in Africa. On Tuesday, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared a public health emergency due to a 160 percent increase in mpox cases on the continent since 2023.

It is worth noting that WHO also declared a public health emergency in 2022 due to an outbreak caused by Clade IIb, a milder strain of mpox.

Domingo mentioned that the Bureau of Quarantine is on alert status, but no additional procedures have been implemented in their surveillance. Treatment for mpox includes managing symptoms and vaccination for prevention.”
