DOH monitors beds, tightens referrals to prevent overcrowding

Metrosundaily August 23, 2026

THE Department of Health (DOH) continues to closely monitor hospital bed capacity across the country, while strengthening the patient referral system to avoid overcrowding and the concentration of patients in a single facility.

This measure ensures that health facilities operate within their manageable limits, and that patients receive timely and appropriate care without overwhelming any one hospital. By keeping track of bed availability and streamlining referrals, the DOH aims to distribute patients evenly across nearby medical facilities, preventing situations where hospitals become too full to deliver quality service.

The strengthened referral system serves as a key step in balancing the load among medical facilities. Instead of allowing large numbers of patients to gather at a few popular or nearby hospitals, patients are guided to facilities with available space and suitable resources.

This organized approach helps reduce long waiting times, eases pressure on hospital staff, and ensures that every patient—whether with mild or serious conditions—can access the care they need. It also prevents the strain that overcrowding places on supplies, equipment, and overall hospital operations.

In addition to managing hospital capacity, the DOH issued an important reminder to residents who waded through or were exposed to floodwaters recently. The agency urges these individuals to seek consultation right away at the nearest YAKAP clinic or DOH hospital, even if they have not yet felt any symptoms. Early check-ups can help detect and prevent flood-related illnesses such as leptospirosis, which may take time to show signs but can become serious if untreated. This proactive advice aims to safeguard public health and prevent health complications from developing later.
