AS unrest intensifies in Iran due to economic hardship, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is closely monitoring the safety and well-being of the estimated 800 Filipinos residing in the country. The DFA is urging Filipinos to exercise caution and avoid protest areas.
Protests began in Tehran on Sunday, sparked by shopkeepers striking over high prices and economic stagnation. The demonstrations have since spread to other cities across Iran.
Clashes between protesters and security forces erupted on Thursday, resulting in six reported deaths – the first fatalities since the cost-of-living demonstrations began.
The DFA has stated that, as of now, no Filipinos have been affected by the protests.
The agency is advising all members of the Filipino community in Iran to “avoid unnecessary movements, especially into crowded areas.”
Filipinos in Iran who require assistance are encouraged to contact the Philippine Embassy in Tehran via email at tehran.pe@dfa.gov.ph or through WhatsApp or Viber at +989122136801.
