Death toll due to ‘Egay’, habagat climbs to 27

THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Wednesday reported death toll due to the combined effects of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and Typhoon Egay rose to 27.

It was also reported that 13 individuals were missing, while 52 were injured.

Over 2.8 million people, or 765,000 families were affected by the persistent rain and flooding in 4,646 barangays nationwide.

Of them, 289,713 individuals were displaced and were transferred to 677 evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC said that 50,371 houses were damaged—48,495 of which sustained partial damage, while 1,876 were totally damaged.

The estimated cost of damage to 495 infrastructure also stood at P3,529,972,255, while the agriculture sector had P1,983,419,530 worth of damage and losses.

Damage to livestock, poultry, and fisheries also reached P173,808,773.

There were 154 areas also declared under state of calamity due to the effects of Egay and the Habagat.

These cities and municipalities are located in the Ilocos Region, the Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). 

According to the NDRRMC, 595 areas were still flooded as of Wednesday. 

Thirty-two rain-induced landslide incidents and one maritime incident were also recorded. 

There were 68 roads and four bridges that were not passable.

At least P187.4 million worth of assistance was already provided to the affected regions, the NDRRMC added.
