FORMER Senator Leila de Lima and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno have accepted invitations to join the House of Representatives’ prosecution panel in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
This significant development adds considerable legal weight to the prosecution team, particularly given the recent electoral changes that left several original panel members out of office.
De Lima, the top nominee of the ML Partylist, confirmed her acceptance of the offer on Wednesday.
“Got a call from the Speaker just an hour ago. I answered yes to the suggestion/offer to be part of the prosecution panel,” she stated in a message to reporters.
She emphasized her commitment to accountability, stating, “I’ve always believed that public office comes with the duty to uphold accountability, no matter the personalities involved. This is part of my continuing work for justice and reform. I’m here to serve the truth—nothing more, nothing less.”
While official results are still pending, preliminary counts suggest ML Partylist secured enough votes to retain at least one seat in the House of Representatives, ensuring De Lima’s continued presence in the political arena.
The addition of both De Lima and Diokno to the prosecution panel is expected to significantly bolster the case against the Vice President. Their legal expertise and reputations for advocating for justice and accountability will likely play a crucial role in the proceedings.
