THE Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that there are 12.2 percent increase in cyber identity theft cases in 2023.
The PNP-ACG said that from 1,402 in 2022, the cyber identity theft cases have increased to 1,597 in 2023.
Because of the rising numbers, the PNP-ACG reminded the public to be vigilant online.
“PNP-ACG emphasizes the importance of exercising caution in sharing unnecessary personal information online, avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources, and look for ‘https://’ in the URL when entering sensitive information on websites,” said NP-ACG chief Police Major Sidney Hernia.
“Cyber identity theft occurs when individuals unknowingly share sensitive information through methods like phishing, scams, or downloading malicious software,” added Hernia.
“Cybercriminals exploit social media platforms and insecure networks, compromised ATMs, and target data breaches on company, government, or educational websites,” she added.
In two years, the PNP-ACG said 20 suspects were arrested through inquest and regular filing, while other cases are under thorough investigation or referred to other agencies.
Cyber identity theft is punishable by up to 12 years of imprisonment or a fine of at least P200,000 up to a maximum amount commensurate to the damage incurred or both.
